Poe Baltimore was created to fund, maintain and interpret The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, and to celebrate the legacy of one of Baltimore’s most famous residents. We are dedicated to maintaining the museum as a vibrant experience for the thousands of visitors who come from around the world each year, and as part of a broader mission of city-wide events and educational opportunities. Due to the size of the historic site, reservations are required to visit Poe House during regular museum hours/days. Interior tours are given by request, for small groups. Reservations are also required for self-guided exterior tours.

In the last half of the nineteenth century, the house, then used as a curio shop, was called “Lafayette’s Headquarters” or “Washington’s Headquarters” even though neither had actually used it as their headquarters at any time. It was rumored that the curio shop had a live bear on display at one point in time. The historic site is a small space with limited capacity and therefore walk-ins are not permitted.

Each live session has limited seats to encourage interactive discussion and personalize the session for the group. Poe would have been aware of the Old Stone House’s significance since the house was already appearing in guidebooks as a Richmond landmark. An 1843 book already refers to the century-old house as “the old Stone House” and calls it the oldest house in Richmond. There is no evidence that Poe ever entered the home.

The collection even includes his childhood bed! Poe lived in Richmond, Virginia, at various times of his life ranging from his youth up through adulthood. Given how much of his life he spent in and around Richmond, it is a bit surprising that none of his actual homes have been preserved. Nonetheless, the Poe Museum was established in 1922 in the oldest building in Richmond. The founders collected anything they could that related to the author’s life, including furniture, correspondence, manuscripts, trinkets, and clothing, just to name some of the type of exhibits. The ranging collection even includes such oddities as a lock of Poe’s hair collected after his death and some socks that were found in a trunk that belonged to the author.

It claimed, for example, the largest Poe birthday celebration in the world held every January at the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, where Poe was buried following his death in October 1849. In 2009, the museum staged a third funeral for Poe (theatrical) for the Poe Bicentennial at Westminster Hall. Over 1,200 people attended two services. The Edgar Allan Poe House, a National Historic Landmark, is open to visitors throughout the year.

Large parties will have to book separate tour times–rotating or re-entry is NOT permitted. A peculiar feature of the house is the insignia “IR” to the right of the east window on the south side of the house. One theory holds that the initials stand for “Jacobus Rex” meaning “King James” and that the house was built during the brief reign of James II from 1685 to 1688. In 1824, a young Edgar Allan Poe was a part of a junior honor color guard that escorted the Revolutionary War General Marquis de Lafayette around Richmond. After escorting Lafayette around the neighborhood, Poe and the honor guard took the general to the Old Stone House, the residence of the Ege family which had helped supply Lafayette’s troops during the Revolution. In the years to come, Poe would pass the house several times on his walks down Main Street to Rockett’s Landing.

Walking Directions from Inner Harbor – 1.5 miles (passing Poe Grave on the way) – Starting on Pratt and Calvert, head west on Pratt Street. Westminster Hall and Burial Grounds and the Poe Grave will be on the left-hand side of the road at Fayette and Greene. After a few more blocks, you will cross Martin Luther King Boulevard. Continue on Fayette then turn right onto N Amity Street.

The Poe Memorial Association eventually reorganized as the Poe Foundation, which was tasked with operating the Poe Shrine.
